Debra Layne is originally from Oklahoma and moved to Colorado in 1977. She married a classmate and physical therapist, Ted Layne. She has two sons, Todd and Scott. Ms. Layne, PT enjoys flying as a private pilot, as well as skiing, hiking, reading and travel. She has been practicing physical therapy in Boulder since 1977. She is a member of Rotary and has served on the Board of Directors for Impact on Education.
Medical Training and Specialty:
She received her degree from the University of Oklahoma Medical School in Physical Therapy in 1975. In 1992 she was acknowledged as the PHYSICAL THERAPIST OF THE YEAR by the Colorado Physical Therapy Association. Ms. Layne, PT is specialized in orthopedic physical therapy, post-operative rehabilitation, sports physical therapy, work injury rehabilitation, vestibular (balance and dizziness) rehabilitation, TMJ treatment, treatment of headaches, peripheral neuropathy treatment, and orthotics for the feet. She has attended well over 175 post-graduate courses in physical therapy and has lectured and taught courses for other physical therapists. She is a BASI Certified Pilates Instructor.

Ms. Layne is a past-President of the Colorado Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association. She is currently President of Colorado Physical Therapy Network. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Physical Therapy. Ms. Layne is the Managing Member and Owner of North Boulder Physical Therapy providing therapeutic services at two locations: 3000 Center Green Drive, Suite 110 and at 2750 Broadway in the Boulder Medical Center. Ms. Layne, PT is a co-owner with Julie Byrt, PT of Coal Creek Physical Therapy in Louisville located at 315 South Boulder Road, Suite 100. With her husband, Ted Layne, PT, she owns Layne Physical Therapy in Golden, CO.

 | Ted Layne, PT, ATC
Senior Staff Physical Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer
Ted is both a physical therapist and an athletic trainer. He started his ATC career at West Texas University (1976-1977). He then became the Head Athletic Trainer for the University of Colorado (1977-1983). Ted founded Flatirons Physical Therapy (1983-1997) and then started DIA Physical Therapy (1997 to present).
Ted has served as a trainer for CU, the Olympics, Pro Rodeo, and numerous other groups. He enjoys working with child athletes and has coached baseball and basketball teams.
He evaluates and treats a variety of orthopedic and sports patients at North Boulder Physical Therapy three days a week (2002-present). He specializes in PT for the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, ankle, neck, back, and post-operative care. Total joint replacement rehabilitation is a special interest. Anodyne Therapy for orthopedic conditions is another new area of expertise for him.
Ted enjoys seeing his returning patients from Flatirons PT and welcomes new patients.

 | Denise Baugh MSPT
Senior Staff Physical Therapist and Clinical Education Coordinator
Denise received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from The Colorado College, then went on to receive a Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She received her Competency Based Vestibular Certification from Emory University in 2003. She has done extensive course work in manual therapy through North American Orthopedic Institute of Manual Therapists. She has been practicing at North Boulder Physical Therapy since 1999. Prior to that, she was the Director of Physical Therapy at the Headache and Neurological Rehabilitation Institute of Colorado. She has also been an instructor in the Physical Therapy Aide program at PIMA Medical Institute.
Denise specializes in vestibular rehabilitation, headaches, TMJ, orthotics and feet, women’s health and incontinence, neurological conditions (including stroke, brain injury, MS, CP), post-operative rehabilitation (orthopedic and neurological), rehabilitation after motor vehicle or work injury, and general orthopedic rehabilitation. Throughout the years Denise has attended continuing education courses that further her knowledge of treatment techniques.
Denise is a current member of the vestibular association (VEDA) and the State of Colorado Physical Therapy Advisory Committee- physical therapist consultant. She is a past member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Therapists, the American Physical Therapy Association and Colorado chapter research committee.
Personal activities:
When Denise is not practicing physical therapy, she keeps very active. In her free time she enjoys sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, swimming, biking, running with the dogs and skateboarding. She is married with two sons and two dogs. Together they enjoy hiking, skiing, fishing, and camping. Denise is also active with the National Ski Patrol at Ski Cooper Ski Area in Leadville, Colorado and Loveland Ski Area in Georgetown. |
 | Karen Echery, MSPT
Senior Staff Physical Therapist/Master of Physical Therapy/Director of Pilates
Karen is originally from Michigan but moved to Colorado Springs when she was 12. She graduated from Colorado State University in 1995 with a BFA in Dance. Her love of dance introduced her to the work of the Pilates method. Karen enjoys hiking, camping, dancing, and snowboarding as well.
Professional Training and Specialty:
In 1997, she became a certified Polestar Pilates practitioner. Pilates sparked her interest in physical therapy, which led Karen to pursue a Master of Science degree in physical therapy from Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Karen was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to do a clinical affiliation with the physical therapy department of Polestar Pilates and gained experience with a therapeutic approach to Pilates. In 2003, she returned to Colorado. She is a co-founder of the Pilates program at NBPT. Her physical therapy expertise lies in combining therapeutic exercise with manual therapy to teach each patient what to do at home to hasten their recovery from injury and pain.

Senior Staff Physical Therapist/Certified Athletic Trainer
Terry Handy grew up in Rhode Island and moved to Colorado to play in the mountains after living for many years in Philadelphia and San Francisco. When not encouraging patients, Terri enjoys biking, cross country skiing, ultra-running, and climbing 14ers with her dogs.
Professional Training:
Terri received a B.S. in Athletic Training from Springfield College in Massachusetts and worked for several years as a high school/college athletic trainer before returning back to school. She graduated from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, PA in 1991 with a Master in Physical Therapy.
She has continued her training with post-graduate courses in manual therapy, orthopedics, and spine rehabilitation. Terri treats a wide variety of orthopedic injuries and enjoys working with foot and ankle rehabilitation and sports physical therapy.

 | Michelle Harris, PT
Senior Staff Physical Therapist/Certified Pilates Instructor.
Michelle grew up in the Midwest where she received her undergraduate degree in Biology at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. While there she was a member of the track team and qualified for the NCAA Div. III Track and Field Championships. She went on to the Physical Therapy Program at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL where she graduated in 1987. Her interest in athletics lead her to Eugene, OR, where she worked extensively with elite runners, gymnasts and equestrians.
She relocated to Boulder in 1991 and has continued to work with active people of all ages, levels and disciplines including high school, college and professional athletes, as well as general orthopedic and occupational injuries. She specializes in manual therapy of the spine and extremities, pelvic floor dysfunction for men and women, various approaches to movement re-education and therapeutic exercise. She received her Pilates training from the PhysicalMind Institute based in New York City and is fully certified in the Pilates method for mat and equipment. Michelle also completed extensive training in manual therapy through the University of St. Augustine in Florida and completed her manual therapy certification (MTC) in 2007.
Michelle is an avid skier and is a PSIA-certified telemark ski instructor. She also enjoys traveling, rock climbing, cycling and running.

 | Martina Hauptmann, PT
Senior Staff Physical Therapist/Certified Pilates Instructor
Martina is originally from Michigan. She is an avid hiker, skier, and mountain biker who moved to Colorado in search of a more active and healthy lifestyle.
In 1995, she received her physical therapy degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI. Her physical therapy career began in the hospital and then evolved into the orthopedic outpatient realm. She has taken specialty course in stroke rehabilitation, lymphedema management, and sports medicine.
Martina is fully certified in the Stott Pilates method and is able to teach clients from beginner to advanced on all pieces of Pilates equipment. Martina has extensive experience with applying the Pilates principles to clients with a variety of body issue and seeks to tailor each program to fit the needs and goals of each individual.

Ed has been practicing physical therapy since 1993. He is a graduate of New York University and relocated from New York to Colorado in 1995. Ed specializes in the treatment of spine, rib, and pelvic dysfunctions, utilizing primarily manual therapy techniques.
Ed’s hobbies include glassblowing, woodworking, pottery and carpentry. Recreationally, Ed enjoys participation in skiing, mountain biking, and playing racquetball.
Physical Therapy Training: Ed graduated from New York University in 1993 with a degree in physical therapy. He has taken extensive post graduate courses in manual therapy techniques through Manual Therapy Seminars of Denver, CO.

Laura Shove, MSPT

Laura Shove is originally from Boulder, Colorado. She and her husband, Tim, have one son, Barclay, and one daughter, Madison. Laura enjoys distance running as well as mountain bike riding, hiking and skiing. Laura has been practicing Physical Therapy in the area since 1993.
Physical Therapy Training and Specialty:
Laura Shove received her Master of Science in Physical Therapy from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri in 1992. She has many years of experience in orthopedics and received her Manual Therapy Certification from the University of St. Augustine in 1999. Laura specializes in orthopedics, sports physical therapy, post-operative rehabilitation, treatment of headaches, work-injury rehabilitation, spine, and extremity injuries. Laura also performs gait and biochemical foot evaluations and orthotic fabrication as appropriate.

 | Seneca Webb, PT, DPT
Senior Staff Physical Thearpist/Doctor of Physical Therapy
A non-traditional student, Seneca’s original BS degree in Geology and Environmental Science was conferred by Tufts University in Medford, MA in 1991. Seneca moved to Colorado in 1995, and stayed for the climbing and skiing. Working a wide variety of mountain town jobs including trail crew, house-keeping, and food service, Seneca became inspired to make a positive contribution to her community through physical therapy. Work and play injuries shouldn’t be show-stoppers. Seneca loves to focus on function and help a patient return to both work and play as soon as possible.
Professional Training:
Seneca Webb graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Sciences Center in May 2007 as a Doctor of Physical Therapy. She completed undergraduate course work in Boulder and Colorado Springs through CU. Concurrently, Seneca completed a year long program at the Colorado Institute of Massage Therapy in March 2001. She also received certification as a Neuromuscular Therapist.
Seneca brings strong evidence based treatment techniques to North Boulder Physical Therapy. She treats each patient as an individual, she listens, and is very focused on what they want to accomplish in Physical Therapy.

 | Lori Kennedy
Occupational Therapist, Certified Hand Specialist
Lori received a BS in Occupational Therapy from Colorado State University in 1981. She worked in outpatient rehab before becoming certified in Hand therapy in 1991.
Her treatment focus is on return to function after an arm or hand injury. Lori’s expertise is in evaluation and treatment of complex upper extremity injuries or syndromes. She is experienced in manual treatment and fabrication of custom splints.
Lori has worked as a hand therapist in Boulder and Louisville since 1987.
Lori is a Colorado native. She was born in Denver and grew up in Lakewood. Lori raised 3 boys with her husband Russ. She enjoys traveling and has participated in 3 medical missions to Rwanda, Africa and Peru.

Occupational Therapist, Hand Specialist
Meredith was born and raised in sunny Florida, and moved to Colorado in 2007. She graduated from the University of Florida in 2001, with honors, with a bachelor’s degree in Health Science in Occupational Therapy. Meredith has been practicing since 2002, specializing in hand and upper extremity injuries. She also has a strong background in ergonomic assessments and training. Meredith resides in South Boulder and spends her free time camping, skiing, mountain biking, and playing disc golf and ultimate Frisbee.

Physical Therapy Assistant
Dan is originally from Texas. He and his wife currently reside in Lyons. Outside of work Dan enjoys climbing, hiking, biking, backpacking, and photography. Dan is a former competitive soccer player during which time he sustained many injuries which led him to the field of Physical Therapy.
Dan graduated from Valley College in Kansas City, Missouri and received a degree as a Physical Therapy Assistant. He treats all diagnoses with emphasis in post-injury and post-surgical extremities. Dan attends continuing education course regularly to further his knowledge in the field of Physical Therapy and to further improve his patient care.

Brandon is originally from Arvada, Colorado. He recently graduated with a degree in Integrative Physiology from the University of Colorado and is applying to physical therapy graduate schools next fall. His hobbies include hiking, baseball, and boxing.

Renee Backlund retired from a 30 year teaching career in elementary and Montessori schools. She now enjoys greeting patients at the BMC location in her role as office manager. Renee helps to maintain communication between therapists and insurance companies. She has extensive knowledge of insurance plans and is always happy to try to make this confusing world a little easier to understand.

Heather is originally from Montague, Michigan and is currently the office manager at North Boulder Physical Therapy. She moved to Boulder in 2005 to attend the University of Colorado. Heather graduated magna cum laude in 2010 with a degree in History. She is currently enrolled in a masters program in school counseling.
In her spare time Heather enjoys volunteering, hiking, and seeing live music.

Administrative Assistant to the Owner
Nga (Na) was raised in Iowa from the age of two years old. She attended the University of Iowa where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Sociology and Statistics. She moved out to Colorado in 2001 and currently resides in Louisville with her husband Ryan and dog Hiro (whom they adopted from the Humane Society 8 years ago). Nga enjoys the outdoors, is an avid reader, and occasionally dabbles in interior design/home renovations.
Nga assists the clinic owner, Debra Layne, PT with bookkeeping and administrative tasks.

Maxine is considering a career in nursing or in public health. In her free time, she enjoys playing and coaching volleyball, working with children as a mentor, and shopping!
