Physical Therapy for Knee Ligament Injuries
North Boulder Physical Therapy, Boulder, Colorado
Did you know that the knee is the body’s largest joint? It’s no wonder that over 5.5 million people visit their doctors for knee problems each year. Even at our North Boulder Physical Therapy offices, we see a large number of patients requiring physical therapy for knee ligament injuries.
Your knee ligaments are tough cords of tissue that connect your bones across joints. In your knee joint, the muscles act as active restraints while ligaments act as passive restraints. Together they stabilize your knee. Ligament injuries are common in both adults and older adolescents and graded by their severity:
- Grade I, mild: the ligament is stretched out, but still intact
- Grade II, moderate: a partially torn ligament
- Grade III, severe: full ligament tear and knee instability is present
