POSTURAL ORTHOSTATIC TACHYCARDIC SYNDROME

NORTH BOULDER PHYSICAL THERAPY, BOULDER, COLORADO

“POTs” can be a debilitating diagnosis that impacts our ability to stand, walk, go to school/work or participate in daily activities. The dizziness, syncope, loss of vision, headaches, fatigue, anxiety and general horrible feelings associated with POTs are difficulty to overcome with medicine and simple lifestyle changes. This is where Physical Therapy can be helpful. Research has shown us that the development of a proper individualized exercise program can significantly improve and sometimes eliminate POTs symptoms. A strong cardiovascular system is instrumental in controlling the symptoms of POTs

TREATMETNT OF POTs

POTs very rarely presents alone. As a result, the initial evaluation is an in depth look into the patient’s medical history – with the goal of determining and addressing any barriers to exercise. From there an individualized program will be created. The basis for the exercise program is the Levine Protocol. A cardiovascular assessment will allow the Physical Therapist to ensure that parameters and starting points are appropriate for the individual patient. Additionally, the inter-digitization of strength training will be patient specific. Treatment for POTs is a commitment, but one that has been shown repeatedly to have positive outcomes.
